The Reformation Question 1: What were the conditions created during the later Middle Ages which laid the groundwork for the Reformation? I have chosen to look at: the effects of the black death the ending of the feudal system the growth of humanism and science The Protestant Reformation took place in Europe, beginning in the 14th century. It was the movement in which the church established a new branch of Christianity; Protestantism. The Reformation was caused by the Western Schism, Renaissance and Clerical Corruption. Reformers such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and Henry VIII challenged the Pope and church as to whether they could sufficiently define Christian practice. They argued over religious and political distribution of power and in result of this the Counter-Reformation wars and persecutions took place. The Black Death (also known as The Bubonic Plague) surfaced in Europe in October of 1347, when twelve Genoese ships arrived in the Sicilian port of Messina. The people awaiting the ships at the port were greeted with a most unpleasant surprise; many of the people aboard the ship had died and those who were alive were greatly ill. One of the most noticeable symptoms of their illness were the black boils covering the sailors skin, hence the name â€Å"The Black Death†. Despite the people of Sicilians effort’s they could not stop the plague spreading and it continued to kill millions of people over the next five years.
